Camphora
officinarum
Cinnamomum cam phora
Lauraceae—laurel family
The essential oil of camphor is extracted
by steam distillation of the wood and leaves of camphor trees
at least 50 years old. In China and Japan camphor has been
used as a tonic. Its fragrance is strong, medicinal, and similar
to eucalyptus. Today most camphor is chemically produced from
pinen. The essential oil strengthens and stimulates the body.
In the past camphor was used in smelling salts. The oil may
be helpful for shock and heart failure, since it stimulates
breathing and the heartbeat. In addition, the oil’s
strong antiseptic properties aid in cold treatments. Camphor
also helps relieve muscle pain. As a general tonic it strengthens
the nervous system.
Dosage: Take orally 1 to 2 drops, diluted, one to two times
daily.
Caution: The essential oil may cause cramps if taken in higher
quantities. It should not be used by people with epilepsy
or children under five years old.
